Certainly, speaking to the growth of the sector was the fact that nearly six times more stocks were added
to the list from the BioMed/Healthcare segment of the market than were deleted.
The Russell 3000® Index measures the performance of the largest 3000 U.S. companies representing
approximately 98% of the investable U.S. equity market and serves as the U.S. component to the Russell
Global Index. Getting included in the new list is a big deal for many of these companies and their investors
because these Russell indexes are widely used by investment managers and institutionals for index
funds and as benchmarks for both passive and active investment strategies. It is estimated that $4 trillion
in assets are currently benchmarked to Russell indexes.
"It means they are on the radar screens of money managers who have to replicate the Russell 2000 or
Russell 3000," says Steve Claiborne, a spokesman for Russell, adding that smaller companies commonly
highlight their inclusion. "It's a bit of good news for them."
